OK, here's what my fertile mind came up with: Contact (in person would be best) some local church pastors; they may know of congregation members who could-would accommodate.
Contact the local newspaper and see if they'd like to do a story about how tough it is for someone in your boat to do what you want to do.
Contact the local school superintendent or high school principal and ask if there are any teachers who have spare space that you'd be willing to rent for dirt cheap. See if last year's foreign exchange student hosts would like a boarder.
Ask at the local gas station, quick mart, McDonald's.
Take out an ad in the paper stating what you want, not look for what's available.
Ask at the local cop shop.
In ALL cases, have at least some documentation that you can provide to provide you're not a lonely and underemployed ax liquidateer. Be prepared to provide as many references as anyone would want. Be clean and neat when you do it. If you get any nibbles, offer to bring your family unit out for a looksee at them, too.
