Lest we forget, the Twin Cities already had one of the most expansive light rail systems in the US. It was sold out and destroyed to make way for that lovey new 1950's technology: Busses and lots of cars.

And next it will be speeders and then it will be checking all license plates so we can catch stolen cars and-or persons. The decline in personal privacy continues.

A fair amount of speeding and red-light running are the result of driver frustration. Traffic lights that are not synchronized to encourage speed limit driving will do that.

I think your vision of what the streetcar system was like might be a bit nostolgic, (and probably 2nd hand). Here's an article reprinted in the strib this past summer. It...

Poor signal programming goes in the same bucket with selling out the first light rail system. They are both examples of government that can't do what its supposed to and takes away more of our liberty to try to "fix" the problem.

First we lost the ability to take light rail from one end of the metro to the other, getting busses or having to drive instead. Now they want to use robot cameras to penalize those who get frustrated with their poor signal programming by running red lights. Oh, and now we get to spend how many millions to replace a small portion of the light rail system that was run into the ground and destroyed.
