snipping of a great post

You sound like a bright, intelligent person and would succeed at whatever you turned your hand to.

Volunteering is a great way to get some experience inside a hospital and learn a bit of what nurses do. When you are "on duty" hopefully you'll be able to speak with some of the nurses and get ideas about schools in your area. You may also wish to consider becoming a nursing buttistant. That way you will be able to do more direct patient care than just being a volunteer.

One thing to be warned about, the constant negativity of some nurses seeking to discourage you from entering the profession. Listening to some one would think one was offering to join the white slave trade.

If I were you I'd look into either an buttociate or Bachelors nursing program, depending on how much time you have and what your financial situation is like. LPN work is somewhat limited depending upon what area of the country you live in.

Next start thinking about nursing schools. Contact those in your area for information about their programs. Many schools have open houses where prospective students meet with current students and staff where you can ask questions.

Nursing schools in many areas are reporting an upsurge in enrolments. This may be due to the wide spread attention the "nursing shortage" is getting by the media, or a reflection of economic times as those not able to find work elsewhere are attracted to nursing as a steady profession. Regardless most nursing schools accept only a set number of students per clbutt, usually based upon the completion of pre-nursing sequence with a certain GPA, and other factors such as your score on a Pre-Nursing Exam (if required). Compebreastion can be fierce, so if the minimum required GPA for entrance is 2.5 don't think a 2.9 will automatically get you in.

The above is important because each semester you are not actually in a formal nursing program means your graduation and becoming a nurse is delayed. Again this may or may not effect you depending upon your financial-home situation.

Nursing programs either buttociate or bachelor are not a cake walk. Indeed there may be days when you are not sure if you are coming or going. You'll need to be very organized and hopefully have a good support network to get you through the rough spots.

Finally I might add that once you get into a nursing program, please don't get disillusioned. If you are volunteering in a hospital by then, what you are being taught in clbutt may seem very different than actual nursing practice. Just go along and do your best, once you have your papers things will be different.

Best of luck,

Candide
