Wearing Whites 304

All this discussion of uniforms and whites reminds me of something I observed 20 or more (eek?) years ago...it was when I was working as a unit clerk while I was in nursing school, so it was probably around 1979 or 1980. (Wait...I have to sit down).

On the unit I was working on one evening, one of the LPNs had received a gift (I don't remember from whom) of a beautiful striped cardigan sweater. She put it on, draped over her uniform (fastened at the neck but unbuttoned, draping over her uniform blouse). She was beaming.

The head nurse, a very old-school, by-the-book leader-dictator sort, came by and saw her wearing it and receiving compliments about it. This particular LPN had probably worked on this unit for at least 25 years. The head nurse said, "Oh, Mrs. -- that is such a beautiful sweater! It truly is lovely!" She sounded so sincere--which I found odd, since she rarely would dish out compliments like that, but I thought maybe she really had some affection for this woman who had given so many years of hard work (and she truly was a hard worker) to this unit. Considering how cold this particular head nurse usually was, I found it touching. But not for long.

The head nurse then followed up with, "It's too bad I can't allow you to wear it while on duty." She then explained that because it wasn't a solid color, it violated hospital policy on acceptable attire for nursing staff, and that she (the LPN) would have to take it off immediately until the end of the shift.

She (the LPN) looked shocked--crestfallen. And she was really peeed. Probably not so much at the thought that she had to remove the sweater, but at being momentarily fooled into thinking that the head nurse was actually being kind, when, in her clbuttically sadistic way, she was just setting her up so that the order to remove the sweater would sting a little bit more.

Well, thank you for indulging that little digression. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.
