Something worth thinking about. Several generations ago the many various dieting plans and people committed to diets were not as commonplace. What was commonplace was how much larger the average persons calorie expenditures were. Housewives toiled very hard doing housework in the fashion that was necessitated by the lack of today's labor saving devices. A much larger percentage of the population lived on family farms and toiled from sunup to sundown. Again much of the machinery used today did not exist. The city dwelling male heads of the households also held jobs that were much more labor intensive than what is usual today.
In addition the common food fare offered at the family dinner table was far less varied than that today. Often rather bland and very seasonal. Eating out was often a rare treat for special occasions.

Even the outlets for entertainment and relaxation were far more likely to require greater physical effort during that era. For example kids played hide and seek rather than a video game. Adults played croquet rather than watching TV.
Obesity existed but in far lower percentages than today. Is it overreaching to suggest that there was a connection to all of the above and today's epidemic of obesity, even among children.
