Carl ( previous post snipped-follow thread )
It looks like the Congress has been frozen into inaction by the righteous indignation of the people. Bush was elected NOT because people voted for him, but rather voted AGAINST Kerry( a foolish criteria, IMHO ), and thus held their noses when they pulled the lever for Bush. Now, that there is no such alternative, the peoples' true wishes are now being heard, and thus, the bush plan will rise and fall on its own merits, as the Republicans do not have a scapegoat to provide a negative alternative, as has been their strategy.
Actually, Carl, the only good thing that came out of this, is that we recognize that there IS a problem. There is no question that in 2042, Social Security will face a situation in which it has an unfunded liability, which will fall squarely on the shoulders of Government. The earlier we address the problem ,the less bitter the medicine will be solving it. Bush's plan, however is NOT the answer.
I hope. but unfortunately, even after 2008, they will opt for another quick-fix. True, this quick-fix might defer the problem cropping up again until close to the end of the century, but it will not solve it. The one thing that would solve the problem for good is NOT being considered. Most unfortunate.
Carl, it is a war. But the war is pitting reason and compbuttion against ignorance, selfishness and indifference, with Bush on the latter side.
