I too was born at the bottom of the Great Depression, O.T.. I have never been "starving" but I have known hunger; and the inherent fear and dread that it brings on. And, yes; like you I've taken precautions and made savings and investments that would, hopefully, carry us through another one like the 20's-30's disaster. However, we probably have not the vaguest idea of what the "next one" will be like; it may share no similar characteristics with the one that happened way back in yesteryear.
Today our citizens are totally unwilling to save any substantial part of their incomes. We have become a "Welfare State" and our citizens think the U.S. Government is obligated to bail them out of every disastrous situation. Some day the cruel truth will come home to roost upon their doorsteps as it has with so many hundreds of thousands under the Katrina disaster. Our current crop of Baby Boomers (some now approaching retirement age) have no idea of how to protect their futures. And, if they were to find out how to do that, they would pay no attention. They look to the Guv'Mint and our current crop of stupid politicians to bail them out and, oh my, are they going to be disappointed !
